Aluminum pricing

Three numbers get quoted when people talk about the price of aluminum in the US. Here is what each one is, and what it is not.

The LME aluminium price

The London Metal Exchange price is the global benchmark for primary aluminum. It is a price for metal on exchange terms, before it reaches any particular country.

The Midwest premium

The Midwest premium is a delivered, duty-paid regional market premium for primary aluminum in the US. It moves with freight, duties, and supply and demand in the US market, so it is not a fixed sum of any one of them.

The Midwest Transaction Price

MWTPro publishes a Midwest Transaction Price: the LME price plus the Midwest premium. It is a reference for primary aluminum delivered in the US. It is not the price of a can or an end.

Where to follow the market

Live market data from MWTPro (LME aluminium plus the Midwest premium) is linked below. Informational only, not Arc pricing.

What it means for cans

Can sheet is made from aluminum, so large moves in the metal market show up in can costs over time.

Arc quotes are separate

Nothing on this page is an Arc price, and no Arc quote is worked out from these figures. For a price on your cans, ask for a quote.
